Letter to the editor

In June 2005, when the U.S. Supreme Court made its controversial ruling in Kelo v. City of New London, which allows municipalities to acquire property via eminent domain and transfer ownership to private developers, it brought back painful memories. My parents lost the only home they ever owned through eminent domain when I was 5 or 6 years old.

My parents believed they did not receive a fair price and never recovered from this loss. When I heard that my state senator, Susan Garrett, was sponsoring legislation that would provide more protection and fairer compensation to home owners I was quite pleased to say the least.

On July 28, Gov. Blagojevich signed her bill into law. It was good to see her year of work on this legislation come to a successful completion and provided me with an additional reason to believe that it does make a difference who we support for political office.
