Garrett offers scholarships for students in 29th District

HIGHWOOD -- State Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, announced opportunities for 2009-2010 General Assembly college scholarships to Illinois state universities for high school seniors and current college and graduate school students. Scholarships are open to residents of the 29th Senate District, living in the communities of Bannockburn, Deerfield, Glencoe, Highland Park, Highwood, Northbrook, and parts of Des Plaines, Fort Sheridan, Glenview, Knollwood, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Mount Prospect, Niles, Prospect Heights and Riverwoods.

Eight full-tuition scholarships are available at the following state schools: University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, Northeastern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Governor's State University, Eastern Illinois University, and Chicago State University.

The scholarships will be awarded by a committee of community volunteers based on the applicants' academic achievements, civic activities, letters of recommendation, confirmed admission status and financial need. Occasionally, there are a few scholarships for summer session only that have been vacated and available to be awarded to eligible applicants to attend one of the Illinois state universities. These summer scholarships are for tuition only and applicants must currently reside within the 29th District. All completed applications must be received by Garrett's office at 425 Sheridan Road, Highwood, IL, 60040, by 4 p.m., Friday, March 27.
