News briefs: Garrett measure sent to governor

By Pioneer Press Staff

A reform measure sponsored by State Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) advanced in the State Senate, which concurred with the House of Representatives on a proposal intended to promote accountability and reform Illinois' Tollway Authority.

The measure creates an Inspector General (I.G.) position for the Illinois Toll Highway Authority. The I.G. will be responsible for investigating fraud, corruption and mismanagement at the Toll Highway. The position will be appointed by the Governor, with advice and consent of three-fifths of the Senate for a term of five years.

Garrett said the position "ensures greater oversight into their day-to-day operations and helps prevent any types of mismanagement." The Inspector General will have the "authority to audit and investigate contracts that have, in the past, been subject to insider deals," she said.

Senate Bill 3118 has been sent to the governor for approval.
