Tollway accountability |
| By News Sun Staff |
A legislative reform measure intended to promote accountability in the Illinois Tollway Authority has been passed by the State Legislature. The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, creates an Inspector General position for the Toll Highway Authority. The Inspector General will be responsible for investigating fraud, corruption and mismanagement, Garrett said. Under the legislation, the inspector would be appointed by the governor, with approval of the Senate, for a term of five years. "Creating a position for an Inspector General for our Tollway system ensures much greater oversight into their day-to-day operations and helps prevent any types of mismanagement," Garrett said. "The Inspector General will have the authority to audit and investigate contracts that have, in the past, been subject to insider deals." After passing both chambers, Senate Bill 3118 has been sent to the governor for his approval. |
