State Committee to Look into Metra Finances, Operations

By Travis Truitt

An Illinois state Senate committee is planning to hold hearings about recent financial scandals at Metra.

The former head of the commuter rail agency committed suicide after it was revealed he improperly received nearly $500,000 in funds.

State Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Highwood, is calling for a forensic audit of the agency's finances.

GARRETT: It's distressing to pick up papers every week and learn that still something else has gone undetected when it comes to financial improprieties at Metra.

The Metra board of directors has hired an outside firm to investigate Metra's finances. But Garrett says an internal watchdog would have greater access to information and personnel.

A Senate committee hearing to investigate Metra finances and operations is scheduled for the end of the month.
