GARRETT’S BILL TO CREATE A CONDOMINIUM ADVISORY COUNCIL TO ADVISE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HIGHWOOD, Illinois – A bill has passed in the Illinois legislature that will establish a Condominium Advisory Council to identify issues facing condominium owners and associations and advise the General Assembly on amending laws relating to condos. State Senator Susan Garrett (D – Lake Forest) is the Senate sponsor of the bill (HB 759).

The Condominium Advisory Council will be composed of four members of the General Assembly (one each appointed by the President of the Senate, the Minority Leader of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, and the Minority Leader of the House), plus three members of the public, appointed by the Governor, who have knowledge or ownership interest in condos.

The Council’s task will be to study the Condominium Property Act and other Acts that affect condo ownership and to suggest legislation to the General Assembly to amend those Acts as needed. The Council is directed to report its findings and recommendations by January 31, 2008, and then to dissolve once its work is completed.

“Our goal is to ensure that condo owners have more legal representation on their particular issues,” said Senator Garrett. “Oftentimes condominiums have barriers that work against the owners. With this Council, the process will be more open and there will be more opportunities for input.”

House Bill 759 now awaits the Governor’s signature. It will take effect immediately.
