State Senator Garrett passes legislation to give veterans homestead exemption |

SPRINGFIELD, IL— State Senator Susan Garrett (D – Lake Forest) passed legislation last week to ensure that all veterans receive a homestead exemption. “Under current law our veterans are not being delivered the full privileges of homestead exemption,” said Garrett, who serves as Vice-Chair of the Senate’s State Government and Veterans Affairs Committee. “I’ve heard from veterans all over my district who have been victim to the loopholes of the law. This is not how our heroes deserve to be treated.” Senate Bill 804 allows a returning veteran who secures a new residence after the first of the year to still qualify for the full amount of the returning veterans homestead exemption on the principal residence. The Returning Warrior Homestead Exemption Act provides qualifying veterans a one-time $5,000 reduction of their home’s equalized assessed value (EAV). Qualifying veterans who return from active duty in an armed conflict involving the U.S. Armed Forces can file an application upon their return home to receive this exemption. It is scratching the surface in an effort that the government, both state and federal, needs to make in increasing benefits and standards for the military and its veterans. “It’s only fair that the same valor and commitment that veterans display through their service to this country and the people of Illinois is reciprocated on their return,” said Senator Garrett. “This legislation is one of many steps we must take to ensure that our veterans are treated with honor and high regard.” |
